Bell Canada and Techné to Develop Enterprise Information Portal Toolset

Knowledge workers to benefit from Strategic Knowledge Management Support Environment

TORONTO, ON – January 7, 2003 – Bell Canada today announced that it has signed an agreement with Techné Knowledge Systems to develop a commercial Enterprise Information Portal (EXIP) toolset. This project, worth more than $2.4 million, is the joint effort of Bell University Laboratories, Techné, Precarn Incorporated, the University of Toronto and GINI University Services, a research services company of Dalhousie University. Techné Knowledge Systems is a leading provider of accelerated migration and transformation technology and related services with extensive expertise and experience in Knowledge Management. Precarn Incorporated is a national consortium of corporations, research institutes, and government partners working with the intelligent systems sector. Precarn funds and coordinates collaborative research and promotes the importance of intelligent systems technology throughout Canada.

Under the terms of the agreement, Techné will provide commercial development of a toolset and development platform for delivering Knowledge Management support environments. This work stems from an innovative project that originated inside Bell and was conducted through Bell University Laboratories’ research at the University of Toronto. The resulting Knowledge Management support environment will assist knowledge workers with broad and disparate expertise in assessing and debating the relevance of events as they occur against a projected future. This in turn will help them apply their knowledge in adapting to change and emerging opportunities. The existence of such an environment allows for significantly enhanced efficiency, speed and quality of response by decision makers in a rapidly changing world. The initial application will be for Bell’s IS/IT department in the area of strategic Enterprise Architecture analysis.

“This project will better equip our Enterprise Architecture team to identify developments in the technology industry, and to plan for related impacts to the Bell Canada IS/IT environment,” said Bob Noseworthy, Vice-President of Architecture and Business Development, Bell Canada. “This unique application ties decision modelling and document management together to support small groups of collaborating knowledge workers. The immediate impact will be efficient retention and distribution of the Knowledge Capital generated by our team, which we believe will result in significant cost savings, better communication, and higher payback IS/IT investments.”

“We’re very pleased to be collaborating with an industry leader like Bell Canada and such prominent Canadian research institutions on this project,” said Martin Stanley, President of Techné and project lead. “Our goal is not only to create advanced technology, but also to aggressively bring it to market once it’s completed. The EXIP technology will be aimed at enterprise-level companies and organisations employing business, market and systems analysts as well as other groups of knowledge workers that perform high-volume information analyses.”
