Techné Knowledge Systems Completes Legacy Software Conversion Project
for SaskTel
Highly Automated Transformation Technology Preserves Intellectual
Capital; Offers Reduced Risk and Guaranteed Results at a Fixed Cost
TORONTO, ON – July 20, 2004 – Techné
Knowledge Systems today announced the completion of a legacy software
conversion project for SaskTel in which important applications were
converted to Java using Techné’s JConvert/PB –
the complete solution for transforming legacy PowerBuilder applications
into Java.
With several key applications developed in PowerBuilder and the
SaskTel IT decision to retire PowerBuilder, SaskTel was faced with
the challenge of how to convert these legacy applications while
preserving the inherent intellectual capital contained within. With
about 90,000 lines of code, recreating the applications anew would
have required substantial effort, time and cost.
“Rewriting the application from scratch was not an option,”
said Al Rogers, General Manager - ITM at SaskTel. “It would
simply have not been cost effective. We probably would have left
these applications as is. Techné’s solution appealed
to us because they guaranteed that the new Java-based applications
would look, feel and function the same as the PowerBuilder applications
but would offer greater future benefits.”
An important point that factored into SaskTel’s decision
was the desire to reduce the number of technologies supported. The
shrinking pool of trained PowerBuilder personnel available made
the Business Case more favorable.
“SaskTel’s growing business requirements necessitated
the move to a modern platform and our solution supported their strategic
direction to consolidate on Java,” said Martin Stanley, President
and CEO, Techné Knowledge Systems. “Our proprietary
JConvert/PB solution along with our finely tuned Migration Methodology
meant that we could offer guaranteed results, minimize risk and
most importantly preserve and enable the continued use of the intellectual
capital embedded within these applications.”
At the core of JConvert/PB is the PowerBuilder to Java translator,
PBT. This is Techné’s highly automated industry-leading
transformation technology that produces an exact equivalent of the
original PowerBuilder application in Java including all of the application’s
business rules without any error-prone human interpretation. Deploying
the technology while utilizing Techné’s highly structured
and time tested Migration Methodology the company is able to ensure
guaranteed results, minimal impact on the technical staff as well
as no disruption to current operations.
